Principal Dr Ian Whyte first coined the catchphrase network, network, network! in 1993, the year ICHM accepted its first intake of 47 students from around Australia and 10 other countries.
The agreement to set up ICHM had been signed the year before, on 30 September 1992, between the South Australian Government, the Swiss Hotel Association (SHA) and the Lipman family.
In the same year that ICHM welcomed its first students, the pioneering SHA’s Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne celebrated its first 100 years.
Unlike today, in 1993 hotel management was little known as a profession in Australia, so ICHM began with a dual marketing role: to establish hotel management as a profession and ICHM as the go-to college.
Over the past 25 years more than 2500 young people have come through the doors. This semester, ICHM enrolled its first student from Nigeria, bringing the count of countries to 93.
And network, network, network! has been a continuous call to action over the years, with a large number of graduates going on to achieve great things in hotel management and hospitality related fields, or careers of a completely different kind.
As one graduate says, ‘The network of ICHM graduates more often than not makes the next strategic career move just a phone call away’.
ICHM’s 25th birthday was another cause for celebration at this semester’s Course Commencement Ceremony, when new and returning (from industry placement) students are welcomed.
