Carla Surace (photo) is Business Development Manager at Sofitel Melbourne on Collins. The 24 year old has come a long way since graduating in 2014. Her first job – lined up for her by ICHM’s Industry and Career Development team – was as Global Group Sales Coordinator for Marriott International in London. ‘If it weren’t for ICHM connecting and supporting me I would not be where I am today’, she says.
Imalka Maddaumapatabendi is Operations Manager at Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel. At ICHM from 2009 to 2012, his industry placements were at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, Ayers Rock Resort Uluru and Sebel Melbourne, where was offered his first job, as Night Auditor. ‘ICHM gave me the ability to understand different cultures and find ways to connect with students from different backgrounds’, he says.
Mark Gaynor has just been appointed Hotel Manager at Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana. He was previously Executive Assistant Manager at Ibis Singapore on Bencoolen. He describes his career as jet propelled! ‘AccorHotels has really taken care of me, and I am one of many beneficiaries of its rapid growth.’ He is continuing his Asian adventure, following on from country Victoria and Brisbane. ‘I am forever grateful for the lifelong friends I made at ICHM and for the opportunities that it opened up to me.’
Panida Ottesen is a Marketing and Communications specialist. After taking an extended break from Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20, where she was Marketing Communications Manager, she has been appointed to a special project—the SportAccord Convention, which will be held in Bangkok in 2018. Her industry placements at ICHM (2003–2007) were at Hilton Adelaide, Sheraton Towers Singapore and Hyatt Regency Chicago, USA. ‘Through ICHM I gained international experience, knowledge about different cultures, confidence, and a professional attitude and service mindset.’
Lucas Demetrescu is Corporate Food & Beverage Manager Ibis South America, responsible for 170 hotels. His start at AccorHotels came with his appointment as Food & Beverage Assistant Manager (and then Food & Beverage Director) at the Sofitel Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport. His industry placements were at Hotel du Rhône in Geneva, Switzerland and Sheraton Mofarrej in São Paulo, Brazil. ‘ICHM’s program has always been at the pinnacle of innovation; creativity that has helped me in imagining solutions in my various jobs.’
Jung Hyun Oh is General Manager at the Novotel Ha Long Bay Hotel, Vietnam. He made his start in Food and Beverage at the Stamford Plaza Adelaide, working his way up within four years to Banquet Manager. A move to Perth followed, when he was appointed Food and Beverage Manager with AccorHotels. Vietnam came next, in 2013. ‘ICHM gave me the fundamental knowledge of and experience in hotels and, more importantly, the mindset of a hotelier, which is very important when developing your career’, he says.
Lokesh Sabharwal is Vice President – Development & Special Projects.
AccorHotels South Asia, responsible for leading growth activities across India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. His industry placements while at ICHM (1995–1998) were at Hyatt Regency Delhi and Grand Hyatt Melbourne. He went on to take up a Corporate Traineeship with Hyatt International. ‘ICHM helped me develop the confidence and networking skills to explore new opportunities, which may not necessarily be traditional or obvious, and my advancement has been the direct result.’
