It is fitting that in the year following ICHM being named Australia’s Best Hotel and Hospitality School* that we thank and farewell outgoing Chief Executive Gerald Lipman in this special edition of On Course. Gerald has been at the helm of ICHM for the past 22 years, picking up the reins from his father and ICHM founder Dr Rex Lipman in 1998. *(QILT, SES, 2018)
In that same year, ICHM marked one of many milestones when it introduced its Hospitality Degree, a first for Australia outside the university sector. We could go on to mention many more - the move from vocational to higher education, the partnerships formed with offshore hotel schools and the Masters Degree being just a few.
But perhaps the best measure of success during Gerald’s tenure is the number of graduates who are now general managers of top properties in Australia and around the world and the countless others who are well on their way.
And then there are the entrepreneurs who have used what they learnt at ICHM as the backdrop for business ventures, ranging from property management and information technology through to marketing and human resources.
Gerald has guided ICHM through a remarkable period, positioning it as a prestigious and progressive school that has graduated more than 3000 young people from 95 countries, who have the skills, knowledge and professionalism to go on to fulfill their aspirations and excel in international careers.
During his time at ICHM Gerald has attended 45 Course Commencement, 43 End of Course and 21 Graduation Ceremonies, most often with wife Louise by his side, to offer a welcoming gesture, an encouraging word and a considerable amount of at-home hospitality.
Wherever he goes - and as everyone who knows him knows, he travels a lot - Gerald has always put ICHM’s interests front and centre. And we’ve asked a mix of individuals who have crossed his path over the years (and in more recent times) for their comments.
