On 30 January 2017 we announced that Charles Darwin University (CDU), one of Australia’s public universities, had acquired 100% of ICHM. Since the start of 2017, three ICHM graduates have been appointed as General Managers and one as Hotel Manager. At last count, ICHM has more than 50 General Managers located around the world.
Of the three recent appointments, Jake Yang scores a first. Appointed General Manager at the hip Ovolo Laneways in the heart of Melbourne, he is the first Korean graduate to be appointed General Manager of a hotel in Australia.
Before joining Ovolo Laneways, Jake was Rooms Division Manager at QT Hotels and Resorts Canberra. He has held senior roles at the Stamford Plaza Adelaide, Langham Hotel Melbourne, Park Hyatt Seoul, Park Hyatt Canberra and W Hotel Sydney.
Rachael Harman (photo) has been appointed General Manager of the chic Le Méridien Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state, northern Borneo. For the past six years she has been at The Westin Kuala Lumpur, where she held various management positions, including Director of Sales and Marketing.
Adelaide born, Rachael’s 19-year career with Starwood Hotels and Resorts spans Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia, including Sheraton on the Park Sydney, Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas, The Westin Melbourne and The Westin Auckland Lighter Quay.
In her new role, she is responsible for all areas in the hotel including future development of associates, product improvement, financial performance and guest satisfaction.
Rachael says ICHM equips graduates with a strong balance of practical experience and business acumen, giving them a competitive edge to enter the industry.

Enriko Purba has been appointed General Manager of the five-star Sahid Jaya Makassar Hotel in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Since 2014 he has been working with Sahid International Hotel Management & Consultant. His first assignment was as Executive Assistant Manager at the five-star Sahid Jaya Makassar (for a year), before being appointed General Manager of the three-star Sahid Bandar Lampung Hotel in Lampung Sumatra (for close to two years). He was promoted to General Manager of the Sahid Jaya Makassar Hotel in January this year.
Justin McConnell is in Brisbane, where he was recently appointed Hotel Manager of NEXT Hotel. He made the move up from the Emporium Hotel where he was Executive Assistant Manager.
In the class of ‘94, Justin scored dux in 2nd and 3rd years and went on to work for Hyatt in a number of locations, including Hyatt Regency Auckland and Grand Hyatt Bali. He is a member of ICHM’s Graduates in Industry International Advisory Committee.
