General Manager of Perth’s Crown Metropol and Crown Promenade, alumnus Anthony Mauro was on campus recently taking part in a Q&A session with students.
A graduate of Adelaide’s Rostrevor College and ICHM, Anthony Mauro recently attended a Q&A session at ICHM that gave students the opportunity to ask questions about matters relevant to them, rather than second-guessing their interests.
‘The level of engagement from the students was great and I would love the opportunity to return in the future under the same format’, says Anthony.
Anthony has been with Crown Resorts since graduating from ICHM in 2010. He started out as Front Desk Agent at Crown Melbourne in 2010, before being promoted to Front Office Supervisor (2011), followed by Hotel Duty Manager/Night Manager (2013) and subsequently Hotel Duty Manager (2014).
Anthony moved to Crown Perth from Crown Towers Melbourne in 2016. Since his transfer, Anthony has rapidly moved up the ranks from Front Office Manager (2016) to Rooms Division Manager (2017) at Crown Promenade Perth, before taking up his current position as General Manager of both Crown Promenade Perth and Crown Metropol Perth in February this year.
‘The big breakthrough moment for my career was when I made the decision to move to Perth. My move led me to new opportunities that have allowed me to progress to my current position. I was also very fortunate in having the guidance of some amazing senior managers, a number of whom still lead me today.’
Anthony says that ICHM’s well-rounded understanding of every part of the hotel industry contributed enormously to his success.
‘I entered into hotels with a path and clear concise goals to work towards and I wouldn’t have had that without ICHM’, he says.
He describes his most memorable moments on campus as the times hanging out and enjoying the company of fellow students over the years.
It’s when Network, network, network! began.
‘I can feel the collective eye roll of every ICHM student, but networking has been crucial to my current role and everything leading up to this point. Further, networking and relationship building is one of the best parts of our industry. In our roles we get to meet and work with some amazing people both internally and externally, which not only benefits us through career progression, but also our business’, he says.
Among words of advice to students:
‘Understand that the industry you have chosen requires you to work long and hard, but it is extremely rewarding. Your actions and performance will dictate your level of success.
‘If I could give advice to someone thinking about moving for work, it would be to make the best decision you can with the information that you have at the time, and once you make your choice, make the best of it.
‘Moving is always a challenge, but it has benefited me greatly. I would not be in the position I am today had I not made the decision to move from Adelaide to Melbourne, and then from Melbourne to Perth.’
Anthony enrolled at ICHM in 2007 after meeting a representative of the college.
‘She painted a picture of an industry that made me want and need to be part of it’ says Anthony.
