Two new members on ICHM’s Academic Board bring industry insight, direct experience, and expertise in program and academic development.
Experienced hotelier Justin McConnell has been appointed to ICHM’s Academic Board, along with Professor Roberta Crouch, Director of the MBA and Masters in Business at Flinders University.
Cluster General Manager for Next Hotels & Resorts in Adelaide and ICHM graduate, Justin McConnell looks to contribute industry insight and direct experience of ICHM into the curriculum.
He has been on ICHM’s Graduates in Industry International Advisory Committee for some years, which he says has quietly involved him in the curriculum. However, he views this new appointment as another step in being part of ‘the machine’ that runs it.
‘I am excited to be involved at this level; I think it will be completely different and I will contribute everything I can, whether that be industry experience or reflection on having been a student of ICHM myself.’
Justin was previously General Manager at Next Hotel Brisbane (2017–2018), and prior to that he was Executive Assistant Manager Emporium Hotel (2011–2013) and Director of Rooms Sofitel Brisbane Central (2011–13). Before that he was with Hyatt International—at Sanctuary Cove, and in Bali, Auckland and Sydney (1999–2011). At the Beaufort Heritage, Brisbane (1997–1999), where he started out, he was Night Manager and Front Office Clerk.
His placements while at ICHM were at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne and Brown’s Hotel in London.
Justin was a professional chef before joining ICHM as a mature-age student in 1994.
Professor Roberta Crouch
As Professor of Business Management at Flinders University, Roberta Crouch provides academic leadership in teaching and research within the disciplines of Wine Business and Tourism, Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing and International Business.
Prior to Flinders University where she has been for close to two years, Roberta was at the University of Adelaide for more than 15 years, most recently as Associate Professor in Wine Business and Marketing and prior to that as Program Director, Wine Business Programs. Before that she was Program Director for the MSc in Wine and Spirits Business at the Burgundy School of Wine and Spirits in Dijon (France). Early in her academic career Roberta worked in the TAFE sector for more than 10 years.
Roberta says her name was put forward for ICHM’s Academic Board because of her extensive experience in program and academic development with the VET and university sectors, and for her strong links with industry.
‘I’ve done a lot of work for Wine Australia, especially researching internationally and the focus has always been the premiumisation of Australian products and Australian wine.
‘Now I’ve moved into tourism and hospitality in research and educational roles, and because my research has been with consumers internationally in developed and emerging markets, I can contribute an international perspective to ICHM’s Academic Board, as well a expertise in curriculum development and accreditation’, she says.
Flinders University is set to introduce a Bachelor degree in Wine Business, Tourism and Export, along with that will be micro-credentialling and short courses, to be delivered online or face-to-face.
Peer Norsell, General Manager of Hilton Adelaide and Dr Tony McMurtrie, Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Adelaide recently stepped down as members of the Academic Board, and ICHM extends warm appreciation for their years of dedicated service.
