CAN I UNDERTAKE THE DEGREE ONLINE FROM OUTSIDE AUSTRALIA?

Yes, students can undertake the degree studies from outside Australia.  We have had students in Africa, Europe, Indonesia, Singapore, North and South America, Canada and of course Australia.  Obviously this is an advantage as students can maintain their work and residence while obtaining an internationally recognised qualification.  Note that international students may not undertake their studies by Internet from another Australian city.  International students must be resident and attend face-to-face classes in Adelaide if they want to undertake the degree program in Australia.

WHAT SORT OF SUBJECT COULD BE AUTHORISED AS APPROVED STUDY?

As indicated above, the ICHM course includes 3 electives.  ICHM is prepared to accept up to one subject being undertaken where the Course Coordinator confirms that this subject will provide the student with appropriate academic education.  Note that in Australia we would expect such subjects to be 2nd or 3rd Year degree level.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE RESEARCH OR WORK BASED PROJECTS?

With approval from the Course Coordinator, students can undertake their electives while working in industry and undertaking a particular project.  Note that ICHM tries to assist in finding an industry placement where the student can undertake this, but we cannot guarantee that such a placement will be found.  Thus it is possible that the student will have to undertake another subject.

IS THE ICHM DEGREE ACCREDITED?

This course is registered by the Australian Government Australian Qualifications Framework at Level 7 Bachelor Degree, equal in standing to a Bachelors Degree issued by any Australian University. The Bachelor of International Hotel Management is accredited by the Training and Skills Commission. The Commission is the only legal body conferred authority under the South Australian Training and Skills Development Act (2003) permitted to accredit Degree programs to private Registered Training Organisations outside of the University sector. Accreditation by the Commission is equivalent to Regional Accreditation in the United States and self-accrediting status of Royal Chartered Universities and Universities enacted by an Act of Parliament. Please contact Mr Vic Korobacz, the Higher Education Policy Officer of South Australia at Korobacz.Vic@saugov.sa.gov.au to verify the accreditation status of the Degree Program.

AFTER COMPLETING MY ICHM BACHELOR DEGREE, WILL I BE ABLE TO ENTER AN AMERICAN MBA PROGRAM? The ICHM Degree, completed on campus or online, is accredited by the Training and Skills Commission. The Commission is the only legal body conferred authority under the South Australian Training and Skills Development Act (2003) permitted to accredit Degree programs to private Registered Training Organisations outside of the University sector.

The ICHM Degree is recognised as a quality Australian degree which any ‘ivy league’ American university should accept as a prerequisite into an MBA program. Note however that ICHM does not presently have any official arrangements with American universities for direct entry to their Masters programs.  There are discussions underway that may allow for articulation into one or more US hospitality Masters programs.

WILL THERE BE ANY DISADVANTAGE IN COMPLETING MY DEGREE SUBJECTS ONLINE IN TERMS OF ACCREDITATION?

Nearly all universities and accredited providers of degrees here in Australia deliver some of their awards via online, flexible or distance delivery.  Not one of these institutions is required to indicate on either the transcript of results or parchment that the degree was earned via distance education.  This is due to the fact that the quality of the degree is not altered whether a student is face to face or at a distance.

Questions regarding online study at a degree level may have arisen because of the fact that the United States is rife with universities sometimes labeled as ‘degree mills’.  Undoubtedly, there is a proliferation of online universities that offer degrees without any form of accreditation or quality assurance.

CAN I WORK IN AUSTRALIA WHEN I HAVE FINISHED?

While non-Australian passport holders are permitted to work in Australia during their industry placements, once they have graduated from ICHM, they are required to return to their home country. Obviously the conditions for students to remain in Australia are set by the Australian Government (Department of Immigration), and these can be changed at any time. At this point it is becoming easier for ICHM graduates with a Bachelor Degree to obtain a Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 880). Because ICHM is based in Adelaide, students can apply for a Skilled Independent Regional Visa (subclass 495), which makes residency even easier. As a result there are around 100 ICHM graduates who have residency in Australia and almost 50 of these are living in South Australia. We are hopeful that this situation will continue.
