Student Visa
International students will be required to obtain a Student Visa to study in Australia. The visa processing charge (payable to the Australian Government) is A$430. As part of the visa process, students may be required to have a medical check with an Australian Government authorised doctor. The fee for this medical is approx A$235.
International student Work Permits
International students on student visas are permitted to work in Australia up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic semesters on-campus, and full time during vacation periods, provided it does not interfere with the demands of study. In order to have work rights, students who obtained a visa before April 26, 2008 need to pay an application fee of approximately A$60; students whose visas were issued after this date need not pay this fee. Applications for the Work Rights Visa can be made after the commencement of study; forms are available from Toni Schammer, ICHM Student Welfare Manager.
Industry Placement
While students are expected to earn income during their industry placements, they will also incur expenses such as:
- Transport costs to and from their industry placement city.
- Accommodation (only a few hotels provide staff accommodation).
- Meals.
- Taxation.
- Public transport to work.
- Personal expenses.
- Entertainment expenses.
These expenses will vary widely depending on location around the world. While income should cover daily living expenses, students need to budget for the upfront costs that are incurred when organising rental accommodation. These costs include bond and connections for telephone, gas, water and electricity. The most significant upfront expense is the bond (typically four weeks rent) and the first rent payment (usually two weeks in advance).

Computers
Desktop computers are provided in each bedroom at RIH (some limits on internet downloads may be imposed). A networked printer is also available for student use. However students may wish to hire or buy a printer for their own use or share with other students in their apartment. Desktop computers are available in the 24-hour computer suite in the RIH student accommodation complex and computers are also available in computer labs throughout the campus. Students living off-campus will probably find it more convenient to bring or buy/hire their own computer and printer.
Storage
While undertaking Industry Placement, students may require storage of personal goods in Adelaide until they return to study on-campus. Only limited, unsecured storage is available at RIH. Several companies offer storage facilities. As a guide, a 1.5m W, x 1.5m L, x 3m H storage unit for 6 months could cost A$357. Larger units are sometimes shared by students to reduce individual costs.
Health & Medical
All international students coming to Australia on student visas are required to have Overseas Students Health Cover. ICHM will arrange cover with Australian Health Management Group Ltd at the students expense. While this cover provides financial assistance towards doctors and some hospital services, it does not cover dental, physiotherapy or optical services (e.g. glasses and contact lenses).
